Every line to the island

Hvar has four ports and two kinds of boat. Catamarans are fast and take foot passengers only; they tie up in the middle of Hvar town and Jelsa. Car ferries are slower and take vehicles, and they land at Stari Grad or Sućuraj, both a drive from Hvar town. Everything below is from the operators’ own 2026 schedules.

Catamarans, foot passengers only

This is how most people arrive. The catamaran docks on the Hvar town riva, two minutes from the main square, so there is no transfer at the other end. No cars, no bicycles as a rule, and luggage is carried on board by hand.

Split → Hvar town. Three operators share the route. Jadrolinija line 641 sails at 10:10 and 16:00 from 19 June to 13 September, returning from Hvar at 11:30 and 17:25; in the shoulder season (13 May – 18 June and 14 September – 11 October) it runs at 10:10 and 14:30, back at 11:30 and 15:45. Kapetan Luka (Krilo) runs the direct hour-long crossing several times a day, and TP Line adds lines 652 and 661. On a peak August day the three of them put up to 19 sailings on the water.

Split → Stari Grad and Jelsa. Jadrolinija line 9603 links Split with the north side of the island: from Jelsa at 07:00 and 13:00 via Bol, arriving Split at 08:30 and 14:30; from Split at 11:30 to Stari Grad, and at 16:30 to Jelsa, arriving 18:00. On Mondays and Fridays there is a 13:00 return from Stari Grad. In high season Jadrolinija 659 also runs Split – Bol – Hvar – Vis.

The coastal runs. Hvar is a stop on the long summer lines down the coast: Krilo Tropic leaves Split at 08:00 for Hvar, Korčula, Mljet and Dubrovnik, and TP Line 842 and 654 cover the same string of islands. That is what makes Hvar → Dubrovnik and Hvar → Korčula possible without going back to the mainland.

With a car, two ways over

Only two lines take vehicles to Hvar, and neither of them lands in Hvar town. A ticket includes a space reservation for that exact departure, so buy it before you queue.

Split → Stari Grad, line 635

The main car ferry, one hour and fifty minutes, up to seven crossings a day in summer 2026. Stari Grad port is a 20-minute drive from Hvar town over the ridge.

Drvenik → Sućuraj, line 632

The short hop at the eastern end of the island, about 35 minutes, up to eleven crossings a day in peak season. It is the sensible choice if you are driving down the coast from Makarska or up from Dubrovnik, but remember Sućuraj is an hour and a half by road from Hvar town along the spine of the island.

Tickets, prices and when to book

Catamaran seats on the Split – Hvar route are the ones that disappear. In July and August the popular late-morning and early-evening departures are usually gone a few days ahead, and the ticket office queue on the Split riva in the morning is not where you want to spend an hour of your holiday.

Prices are honest and low compared with the rest of the Adriatic: around €23–25 for a Split – Hvar catamaran seat, from €15 on the Krilo line that comes via Milna, and roughly €5–6 on the cheapest off-season crossings. Luggage is usually free with one large piece; Jadrolinija charges about €5 per extra bag.

Car ferry tickets are per vehicle plus per person, and the ticket holds your space on that sailing. In August, arrive at the Split ramp an hour before departure even with a ticket.

Use the search at the top of this page to compare all operators on your date in one list, then book directly. It is the same price as buying at the counter.

Skip the queue, arrive by speedboat

A private transfer costs more than a catamaran seat and saves you the whole apparatus around it: no timetable, no queue, no bus from Stari Grad. Split airport or the Split riva straight to the Hvar town waterfront, or to the jetty below your villa, in about 55 minutes.

It makes obvious sense for late flights, for groups of four or more where the per-person price closes in on a taxi, and for anyone staying somewhere the catamaran does not reach.

Getting to Hvar, common questions

Can I take a car to Hvar?

Yes, on two car ferries: Jadrolinija 635 Split – Stari Grad (1 h 50 min, up to 7 departures a day in summer 2026) and 632 Drvenik – Sućuraj (about 35 minutes, up to 11 crossings a day). Catamarans take foot passengers only.

What is the fastest way from Split to Hvar town?

A catamaran, about 50 minutes to an hour, straight into the town harbour. In summer 2026 Jadrolinija 641 sails at 10:10 and 16:00, with Kapetan Luka and TP Line departures through the rest of the day. A private speedboat transfer does it in about 55 minutes on your own schedule.

How do I get to Jelsa or Stari Grad by boat?

Jadrolinija 9603 links Split with Stari Grad and Jelsa daily in summer: from Jelsa at 07:00 and 13:00, from Split at 11:30 for Stari Grad and 16:30 for Jelsa, arriving at 18:00. The Split – Stari Grad car ferry also runs up to seven times a day.

How much does the Split to Hvar catamaran cost in 2026?

About €23–25 one way per adult on the direct Jadrolinija and Krilo crossings, and from €15 on the Krilo line that calls at Milna on Brač. Jadrolinija charges roughly €5 for each extra piece of luggage.

Do catamarans sell out in summer?

Regularly, in July and August. Book three to five days ahead for the departures people actually want, mid-morning out of Split and early evening back. Car ferry tickets include a space reservation for the chosen sailing.

Which port will I arrive at?

Catamarans dock in Hvar town or Jelsa. Car ferries dock in Stari Grad, a 20-minute drive from Hvar town, or Sućuraj at the eastern tip, an hour and a half by road. We can arrange a driver to meet any arrival.

Is there a ferry from Dubrovnik to Hvar?

In summer, yes: the coastal catamarans run Dubrovnik – Mljet – Korčula – Hvar – Split once a day, roughly three and a half to four hours from Dubrovnik. There is no car ferry on that route, and no service at all in winter.

Can I get from Hvar to Bol, Vis or Korčula directly?

Yes, in season. Bol on Brač is 25 to 40 minutes away on the 9603 and TP Line boats, Vis about 50 minutes on the Krilo and Jadrolinija 659 lines, and Korčula around an hour and a quarter on the coastal catamarans. Outside the season most of these stop entirely.

Do ferries to Hvar run in winter?

The backbone runs all year: the Split – Hvar town catamaran and the Split – Stari Grad car ferry, both on a reduced timetable, plus Drvenik – Sućuraj. The island-hopping lines to Bol, Vis, Korčula, Mljet and Dubrovnik are summer only.

What happens if my flight lands after the last boat?

The last catamaran out of Split leaves in the early evening and the last car ferry around 20:30. After that the only way over is a private water taxi, which runs at any hour, or a night in Split. Tell us your flight and we will tell you honestly which is cheaper.
