Early start from the riva

Early start from the riva, before six on the big game trip and at six on the sunrise session. That is not a gimmick: the sea is flattest and the fish are feeding before the wind gets up, and by ten the bite is usually off. Bring an identity card or passport, because the daily fishing licence is issued on board and cannot be written without one. There is a jacket’s worth of chill in the air on the run out, even in August.

Trolling the blue water

Trolling the blue water south of the island, where the bottom drops away and the pelagics hunt. The skipper sets the spread and reads the sounder; you hold a coffee and watch the rods. Depending on the day it is light tackle and drift fishing over the reefs, or heavy tackle with jigs and poppers if there is tuna showing. Nobody needs experience for this. The gear is rigged for you and the crew talks you through the first fish.

When the reel screams

When the reel screams, everything on board changes at once. Dentex and amberjack are the prize on the reefs, common pandora and John Dory the steady catch, and offshore it is bluefin and yellowfin tuna. Recreational rules allow up to five kilograms per angler per day; a big game licence allows one piece of bluefin tuna, spearfish or swordfish, and that catch has to be reported to the Fisheries Directorate. The skipper handles the paperwork. Anything over the limit goes back in the water.

Swim stop and lunch

Swim stop and lunch once the morning session is done. The boat anchors in a sheltered bay, usually on the south side of Hvar or in the Pakleni islands depending on where the fishing took you, and snacks and drinks come out of the ice box. On the eight hour Blue Cave trip this is where the day switches from fishing to sightseeing. It is also when the crew cleans and ices whatever you are keeping.

Back to the riva

Back to the riva by early afternoon, with the catch boxed if you want it. Fish you keep can be cleaned on board and packed on ice; tell the skipper before you go out so he brings enough. Most restaurants in Hvar town will cook your own catch for you if you ask nicely and turn up before service. If the sea was too rough to fish properly we move you to another day or refund you in full. We would rather do that than take you out for five hours of holding on.

Four ways to fish out of Hvar

Every trip is priced per boat, not per person, so the cost is the same whether one of you fishes or the whole crew does. Rods, reels and terminal tackle, the daily fishing licence for everyone on board, snacks and drinks, the ice box, fuel and port fees are all in the price.

Sunrise fishing leaves at 06:00 for five hours and is the classic morning session: bottom fishing and light tackle while the sea is flat and the fish are still up. Sunset fishing is the mirror image, casting off at 15:00 for five hours, trolling and drift fishing for amberjack and dentex into the evening.

Fishing and the Blue Cave is the eight hour day for crews who are not all anglers: an early start at 07:00, a session on the way, and the Blue Cave on Biševo built into the same run. Big game leaves at 05:30 for six hours after bluefin and yellowfin tuna, on heavy tackle with jigs and poppers.

Not included: fish processing, personal travel insurance and tips. Cancellations are free up to three days before the trip.

What bites, and how you fish for it

The reefs and drop-offs around Hvar, Vis and the Pakleni islands hold dentex and amberjack as the prize fish, with common pandora and John Dory as the reliable bottom catch. Offshore, in the deep water south of the islands, it is bluefin and yellowfin tuna. Dolphins turn up often enough that nobody on board is surprised any more, but they are a sighting, not a target.

Which technique you use is decided by the day rather than the brochure. Light tackle and bottom fishing work the reefs in the calm of early morning; trolling and drift fishing cover ground in the afternoon; jigging and popping come out when there is tuna showing. Heavy tackle is standard on the big game trip.

All the gear is on board and the skipper rigs it, so you do not need to bring anything except a hat and something to hold on with. If you have your own rod and want to use it, bring it.

Licences, limits and what you can keep

Recreational sea fishing in Croatia needs a licence, and everyone on board who fishes needs their own. On our trips it is included in the price and we issue it for you. Bring an identity card or passport, because a licence cannot be written without one.

For context, the published rates are €8 for one day, €20 for three, €40 for seven and €92 for thirty. A big game licence, which is a separate category, runs €16 for one day, €26 for three, €80 for seven and €198 for thirty. Rates are set by the state and change from time to time.

The limits matter more than the paperwork. Recreational fishing allows a maximum daily catch of five kilograms per angler. A big game licence allows one piece of bluefin tuna, spearfish or swordfish, and that catch has to be reported to the Fisheries Directorate. The skipper handles the reporting.

Anything beyond that goes back in the water. Fish you keep can be cleaned and boxed for you; tell the skipper before you go out so he brings enough ice.

Good to know before you go

Early starts are not a gimmick. The sunrise and big game trips leave before six because that is when the sea is flattest and the fish are feeding; by ten the wind is usually up and the bite is off. If you want a lie-in, take the sunset trip instead.

Bring a hat, sun cream, sunglasses that you do not mind losing, a light jacket for the run out in the dark, and soft shoes. Snacks and drinks are on board. There is no shade to speak of once the sun is up.

If the sea is too rough to fish safely we move you to another day or refund you in full. We would rather do that than take you out and have you spend five hours holding on.

What do we fish for?

The stars are bluefin tuna and other big pelagics of the open Adriatic, with the exact target depending on season and what the water is doing that week. The crew fishes these grounds year round and follows the fish, not a script.

Do we need experience or a licence?

Neither. The boat carries licensed gear, the crew handles the technical side and coaches anyone on the rod. Complete beginners have landed serious fish here.

What if nothing bites?

Then it was still a morning on the open sea with coffee, stories and a swim stop, but we will be honest: it is fishing, not shopping. The crew works the water hard because they hate empty days more than you do.

Can family or non-fishing friends join?

Yes, plenty of guests come along just for the ride. The boat has space to lounge, and the swim stop on the way home is for everyone.

Can we keep the catch?

Within the rules, yes: the crew cleans it and more than one Hvar restaurant will happily grill your catch for dinner. Ask us and we arrange the table too.

How much does a fishing charter from Hvar cost?

Per boat, not per person: €790 for the five hour sunrise or sunset trip, €950 for the eight hour fishing and Blue Cave day, and €1,020 for the six hour big game trip. Rods, tackle, the daily licence, snacks and drinks, fuel and port fees are included.
