What it costs and how to book

A car ferry ticket is priced per vehicle plus per passenger, so a family in one car pays considerably less than the same family on four catamaran seats. Jadrolinija publishes the current fares on its own site and they change with season and vehicle length.

The important part: a purchased ticket holds a space for your car on that exact departure. Without one you queue and hope, which in the first half of August is a poor plan.

Arrive at the Split ramp an hour before departure in peak season even with a ticket. Boarding is by lane and the marshals close the gate before the advertised time.

Arriving in Stari Grad

The ferry berths in a working port at the head of a long bay, about two kilometres from the town of Stari Grad itself and twenty minutes by road from Hvar town over the ridge.

Buses meet most arrivals and run to Hvar town and Jelsa; taxis wait for the rest. If you are driving, the road climbs immediately and the views back over the bay are the first thing that tells you the island was worth the trouble.

Stari Grad is the oldest town in Croatia and the quieter half of the island: the Stari Grad Plain behind it is UNESCO-listed, and the whole place moves at a different speed from Hvar town.

Good to know before you sail

This is the reliable crossing. When the bura cancels the catamarans in spring or autumn, the car ferry usually still sails, so it doubles as the fallback for foot passengers too.

You can travel on it without a car. Foot passenger tickets are cheap and there is a bus at the other end, which is worth knowing when the Hvar town catamaran is sold out.

Bring what you need for the crossing before you park: once the car deck is closed you stay on the passenger deck for the full hour and fifty minutes.

How many ferries a day are there?

Up to seven in high summer, six in the shoulder season and four to five in winter.

Can I take a car?

Yes. This is one of only two car ferries to Hvar, the other being Drvenik to Sućuraj at the eastern end of the island.

Do I need to book in advance?

In July and August, yes. The ticket includes a space for your vehicle on that departure; without it you take your chances in the queue.

How far is Stari Grad port from Hvar town?

About twenty minutes by road, over the ridge. Buses meet most arrivals.

Is there a night crossing?

Yes, at 01:30, but only between 20 June and 24 August.

Can I travel as a foot passenger?

Yes, and it is cheaper than the catamaran. There are buses from the port to Hvar town and Jelsa.
