What it costs and how to book

About €25 per person one way. Passengers only, and on a single daily sailing that means the seats are worth securing in advance.

Pomena is the western tip of Mljet, at the edge of the national park. If you are staying at Sobra or Polače, check which port your ticket names before you set off — the island is long and the road is slow.

The boat continues from Hvar to Split, so if Hvar is not your final stop you can stay aboard.

Arriving in Hvar town

The boat berths on the Hvar town riva just before seven in the evening, which is a good hour to arrive: the light is going gold and the town is filling up rather than emptying.

Everything is on foot from there. If you are carrying a week of luggage from a national park holiday, arrange a porter — the old town is steps and cobbles.

Mljet to Hvar is a jump from one of the quietest islands in Croatia to one of the busiest. Expect the volume to change.

Good to know before you sail

Pomena and Polače are the two villages at the park end of Mljet, twenty minutes apart. Pomena is where this boat calls; make sure your transfer is aimed at the right one.

One sailing a day and no alternative means weather matters. If it blows, the fallback is Mljet to Dubrovnik and then the Dubrovnik catamaran the next day — two days for a two-hour trip.

The boat is a through service that has come up from Dubrovnik, so it may already be busy when it reaches you.
