Kapetan Luka’s Krilo leaves the Hvar riva at 09:10 heading south and calls at Pomena at five past eleven. There is one sailing and no second chance, so be on the quay by nine.

What it costs and how to book

About €25 per person one way. Passengers only.

The 09:10 out and the 16:55 back make a real day trip: nearly six hours on Mljet, which is enough to walk or cycle round the two salt lakes and take the little boat out to St Mary’s island.

Book both legs. It is one boat a day in each direction, and being stranded in Pomena in August means finding a room in a village of a few hundred people.

Arriving in Mljet

Pomena is a small bay at the western end of Mljet with a hotel, a few restaurants and a path over the ridge into the national park. The park entrance is about fifteen minutes on foot.

Inside are two connected salt lakes, Veliko and Malo jezero, ringed by a flat path that people walk or cycle. In the middle of the larger one sits a Benedictine monastery on its own islet, reached by the park’s own boat.

Bicycle hire is available at Pomena and is the sensible way to see the lakes in the hours the timetable gives you.

Good to know before you sail

Mljet is the greenest island in the Adriatic and the least developed of the big ones. It is a day about walking, swimming in the lakes and eating fish, not about towns.

Buy the park ticket at the entrance rather than in advance; it includes the boat to the monastery islet. Take water, because the path has few places to buy it.

If Sobra or Polače is where you are staying, this boat is the wrong one — Pomena is at the far end of a long island with a slow road.
