Choosing your place on Hvar

Three faces of one island

The west end lives fast around Hvar Town, the centre around Stari Grad and Jelsa moves at half that speed, and the wild east past Sucuraj barely moves at all. Same island, three different holidays.

Where first timers should go

Hvar Town if you want the riva, restaurants and boats to the Pakleni islands. You can day trip everywhere else from there, and the sunset from the fortress settles most doubts.

Where the quiet is

Sveta Nedjelja under the vineyards, Zavala and Ivan Dolac on the south slope, Milna and Zarace in their coves: places where the loudest thing after dark is the sea.

Getting between places

One main road runs the length of the island: a car or scooter covers it easily, buses link the main towns, and taxi boats reach the coves the road never will.

Beaches by place

Every destination page lists its nearest beaches with honest access notes, or browse all of them on the beach map and pick your base backwards from the water.

Sleep where it suits you

Each place page shows live accommodation nearby, from old town apartments to villas with pools above the coves.

Wine country

The south slope around Sveta Nedjelja and Ivan Dolac grows the island's best Plavac Mali, with family wineries pouring tastings a few steps from the sea.

The UNESCO plain

Between Stari Grad and Vrboska lies the Stari Grad Plain, an agricultural landscape worked since Greek times and protected by UNESCO. Walk or cycle it early in the morning.

Hvar destinations, common questions

Which town is best for a first visit to Hvar?

Hvar Town, without much debate: it has the most restaurants, the easiest boat connections and the Pakleni islands in front of it. Base there once, then explore the rest and pick a quieter favourite for next time.

Hvar Town or Stari Grad, what is the difference?

Hvar Town is livelier, with nightlife and yacht traffic. Stari Grad is one of the oldest towns in Europe, calmer and greener, with the car ferry port and the UNESCO listed Stari Grad Plain beside it. Twenty minutes apart, completely different mood.

Where do I find the quietest places on the island?

Head south and east: Sveta Nedjelja, Ivan Dolac and Zavala under the ridge, Zarace and Milna in their coves, and the wild east around Sucuraj where tourism barely reaches. Perfect with a car and no plans.

Do I need a car to explore the destinations?

For the main towns, no: buses and taxis manage. For the small villages, south coast coves and the east, a car or scooter changes everything and turns the island into one big day trip.

Which places are best for families?

Stari Grad, Jelsa and Vrboska: shallow calm bays, flat promenades and pine shade. Hvar Town works too with the right base away from the late night streets.

Can I visit several places in one day?

Easily. The whole island is about 68 km long: a morning in Stari Grad, lunch in Jelsa and sunset in Hvar Town is a completely normal day with a car.
