What it costs and how to book

Between €23 and €28 per person depending on the sailing. Passengers only — the boat that carries cars to Vis goes to Split, not to Hvar.

Two sailings a day and a lot of demand: this is a route worth booking a week ahead in July and August, particularly the evening one, which is the one people use after a day on Vis.

You board at the Vis town waterfront, in front of the customs house. The Komiža side of the island has no scheduled boat to Hvar; allow twenty-five minutes by road to Vis town.

Arriving in Hvar town

The catamaran berths on the Hvar town riva, so you walk off into the square. After Vis, the contrast is abrupt: Vis is a quiet island with two towns, Hvar town is the loudest place in Dalmatia in August.

Taxi boats to the Pakleni islands leave from the same waterfront if you want the quiet back quickly.

For the rest of the island — Stari Grad, Jelsa, Vrboska — the bus station is a couple of minutes behind the riva, though the timetable is sparse.

Good to know before you sail

Vis and Hvar are the classic pairing: the quiet island and the busy one, forty minutes apart. Most people do two or three nights on each.

The Blue Cave on Biševo is off Vis, not off Hvar, and it is much closer to Komiža than to anywhere on Hvar. If that is on your list, do it from Vis before you leave.

In strong wind the crossing is exposed on the open side. Cancellations are rare in midsummer but do happen in June and late September.
