All three departures leave from Gruž harbour, not the old port. Kapetan Luka’s Krilo is the fastest at three hours twenty; the two TP Line boats take a little longer and call at more places on the way.

What it costs and how to book

Between €50 and €55 per person one way. It is the most expensive of the Hvar catamaran routes, and also the longest — the price per hour is unremarkable.

Compared with the alternative it is good value: the drive is four hours plus, the bus longer, and neither ends on the Hvar town waterfront.

This is the route to book early. Three sailings a day carrying everyone moving between the two most visited places in Croatia means July and August sell out well in advance.

Arriving in Hvar town

The boat berths on the Hvar town riva, at the foot of the old town. Everything is walkable from there and nothing is drivable, so travel light or arrange a porter.

After three and a half hours on a catamaran the temptation is to sit down at the first place on the waterfront. Walk two minutes further into the square instead.

If your accommodation is elsewhere on the island, check the bus times before you sail; connections from the riva are limited and taxis to Jelsa or Sućuraj are not cheap.

Good to know before you sail

Gruž is about twenty-five minutes by bus from the old town of Dubrovnik and ten from the cable car station. Leave more time than you think on an August morning.

The boats call at Korčula and sometimes Mljet on the way. That is why the crossing takes three and a half hours rather than two, and it is also why you can break the journey.

It is a long time on a fast boat in open water. If you are prone to seasickness, take something before boarding rather than after — the stretch past Pelješac can be lively.
