What it costs and how to book

Around €25 per person one way. Passengers only, no vehicles, and luggage goes in the racks by the door rather than in a hold.

The 11:10 out and the 16:45 back make a genuine day trip: about four and a half hours on Brač, which is enough for Zlatni rat and lunch, and not enough for much else.

Book both legs at once in high season. The return is the one that sells out, and being stuck in Bol overnight in August is an expensive surprise.

Arriving in Bol

Bol’s harbour is right in the middle of the village, a working waterfront with cafes along it and the old Dominican monastery on the point above.

Zlatni rat, the horn-shaped beach that appears on every Croatian poster, is about a twenty-minute walk west along the seafront promenade, or five minutes by the little road train that runs in summer.

Behind the town, Vidova gora is the highest point on the Adriatic islands. If you have a car it is a forty-minute drive up for the view straight down onto the beach.

Good to know before you sail

This is the only direct connection between Hvar and Brač, and it exists purely because both places are full of visitors who want to see the other one.

The channel between the islands funnels the maestral, which is why Bol is a windsurfing town. It also means the crossing can be lively in the afternoon — not rough, but not flat either.

With a car there is no way across. Vehicles go Hvar to Split and Split to Supetar, which is a long way round for a short distance.
