Cast off as the day cools

Cast off as the day cools, about ninety minutes before the sun goes down. That timing is not arbitrary: it puts you in the Pakleni channel for the golden half hour and back on the riva before the restaurants get busy. The exact hour moves through the season, 20:35 in mid June, 19:55 in mid August, 19:05 in mid September, so we confirm it with you the day before. Bring a light jacket, because the air goes cool quickly once the sun is off the water.

Through the Pakleni channel

Slow cruise through the Pakleni channel, glass in hand, islands going amber. This is the one tour we run at idle rather than at speed, because the point is the light rather than the distance. The channel between Marinkovac and Sveti Klement is sheltered from the afternoon maestral, so it is usually flat even when the open sea is not. Drinks and an ice box are on board.

An evening swim

Anchor in a west-facing cove for an evening swim in water still warm from the day. From June to September the sea holds its heat long after the air starts to drop, and swimming with the sun low on the horizon is the part most crews say they did not expect. In April, May and October most people stay dry and stick to the drinks. Masks are on board if anyone wants a last look at the bottom.

The sun into the sea

The main event: the sun drops into the sea behind the islands and the sky does the rest. From this angle it sets behind the Pakleni ridge rather than into open water, which gives you a silhouette rather than a flat horizon, better for photographs, and the colour lasts longer. The afterglow runs for roughly half an hour after the sun has gone. That is when the stone of Hvar town turns properly orange from the water.

Back under the first stars

Back to the riva under the first stars, in time for dinner. The run home takes about fifteen minutes and Hvar town comes up lit from the sea, which is the view most people only ever get from the ferry. Two hours door to door, so it fits either side of a dinner reservation. If the crew wants to stay out for the afterglow, the skipper will simply wait.

When the sun actually sets on Hvar

A sunset cruise is the one tour where the departure time is not really yours. It is the sun’s. We leave about ninety minutes before sundown, which puts you among the Pakleni islands for the last of the light and back on the riva in time for dinner.

These are the sunset times for Hvar town, in local time. Add roughly half an hour after each for the end of the afterglow, which is when the stone of the old town turns properly orange.

June and early July give the latest, longest evenings; by the end of September you are casting off around six. In April and October the light goes faster and the air cools quickly once the sun is down, so bring a layer.

Good to know before you go

Two hours, mostly at idle. The route runs out along the Pakleni islands, with Palmižana and Mlini bay as the usual places to stop, swim if the water is still warm enough, and open something cold.

Bring a light jacket. The temperature drops noticeably once the sun is off the water, and the run home is into the air. A camera is worth it: the golden half hour over the Pakleni channel is the best light Hvar gives you all day.

Because it is short and slow it is the easiest of our tours for children, for grandparents and for anyone who does not love open water. Nothing here is more than twenty minutes from the riva.

Sunset cruise, common questions

What time does the cruise start?

It follows the sun: we cast off about 90 minutes before sundown, which means around 19:00 in high summer and earlier in the shoulder months. We confirm the exact time for your date when you book.

Can we swim during the cruise?

Yes, that is half the point: we anchor in a calm west-facing cove for an evening swim while the light turns gold. The sea in the evening is often the warmest of the whole day.

Is this a good setting for a proposal or anniversary?

It is the best one we have. Tell us the occasion when booking and we quietly take care of the details: the right cove, chilled bottle, and a skipper who knows when to disappear to the bow.

What if the evening is windy?

The skipper picks the sheltered side of the islands, and if the sea will not cooperate at all we move you to another evening or refund you in full.

Can we extend it with dinner?

Yes: we can drop you at Palmizana for a table at Laganini or Zori and bring you home after, or time the return for your reservation in town. One message arranges both.
