Zlatan Otok, Sveta Nedjelja

Zlatan Otok started in 1986 as one fisherman’s family farm in Sveta Nedjelja. Today it makes plavac mali from the south-slope terraces and wines from two mainland estates, and pours them in a marina restaurant whose cellar sits below sea level.

Zlatan Otok sits in Sveta Nedjelja, a village on the south coast of Hvar where vineyards climb straight up from the sea. It is also one of the easiest cellars to visit by boat: it has its own marina.

From one family farm to 800,000 bottles

Zlatan Plenković was a fisherman born in Sveta Nedjelja. In 1986 he started making wine on a small family farm; in 1991 he founded a company, Vitis, which two years later took the name Zlatan Otok, “golden island”.

The business grew well beyond Hvar. Alongside the south-slope vineyards, the family now farms an estate below Mount Biokovo near Makarska and another on the hills of Jadrtovac near Šibenik. It is run today by Zlatan’s sons, Marin and Nikola.

The range is wide, more than two dozen wines, but plavac mali from the Hvar south slope is still the core of it.

The top of the range is the Plavac Grand Select: Falstaff rated the 2020 vintage 93 points, with the 2020 Crljenak and Plavac Barrique at 92. On the Hvar south slope the family grows mainly plavac mali; the full vineyard list also includes crljenak, babić, syrah, merlot, cabernet sauvignon, mourvèdre and grenache among the reds, and pošip, bogdanuša, žilavka, Dubrovnik malvasia, chardonnay and yellow muscat among the whites.
