A family cellar in Jagodna, on some of the steepest vineyard terraces on the Adriatic. Everything is picked by hand, and tastings are by appointment only.

The story

The Matijević family farms vineyards at Jagodna, on the slope above Sveta Nedjelja on Hvar’s south side. The terraces here run at around 45 degrees, far too steep for machines, so the vines are worked and picked entirely by hand, and no artificial fertiliser is used.

It is classic plavac mali ground: bare limestone, full sun from morning to evening and the sea directly below, which keeps the air moving through the vines. Yields are small and the grapes ripen hard.

In 2023 the family’s Plavac Mali 2018 won a gold medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards in London, one of the largest wine competitions in the world, a big result for a cellar this size.

Visits are small and arranged in advance, so you taste with the family rather than a guide.
