Jo Ahearne became a Master of Wine in 2008, after a career that took in winemaking in Australia, at Charles Melton and Jacob’s Creek, and wine buying for Marks & Spencer and Harrods.
Her first vintage on Hvar was 2014, made in Vrisnik. She owns no vineyards: she buys grapes from local growers and makes wine with minimal intervention, using wild yeasts and little sulphur.
The wines put the island’s rarer grapes forward. Rosina is a darnekuša rosé; Wild Skins is a skin-macerated blend of kuč, bogdanuša and pošip; there is a pošip, and South Side is a plavac mali.
