Pick your watersport

Three ways onto the water, and they suit very different people. The flyboard is the one guests are still talking about in November: a board fed by a hose from a jet ski that lifts you two or three metres above the sea, with an instructor beside you for the whole session. Wakeboarding rewards anyone who has stood on a board before. A paddleboard asks nothing of you at all except a flat morning and somewhere to go.

Flyboarding in Hvar

If you have ever wanted to know what it feels like to fly like Iron Man, or to dive and come back up like a dolphin, this is the one. Water is pumped from a jet ski through a long hose into a board strapped to your feet. The jets do the lifting, you do the balancing. The first minute is usually comedy, the fifth is under control, and by the end of the session most people are hovering a couple of metres above the Adriatic and looking back at the town.

A session lasts 25 minutes and an instructor is with you one on one for all of it: he sets the kit up, gets you into the harness and helmet, and holds the throttle from the ski while you find your balance. No previous experience is necessary, and no, you do not need to be an athlete. Swimming ability is the one thing that is not negotiable.

It is the standing favourite for stag and hen parties and for company team building, because everybody can do it and everybody gets filmed falling in first. Flyboarding arrived on Hvar before it arrived on most of the coast, so the gear is current and the instructors have spent whole summers on the ski.

Wakeboarding behind the boat

Wakeboarding is the classic version of being pulled across the sea: one board, one rope, and a boat that decides how hard your morning is going to be. Hvar helps here, because the water in the lee of the island is often glass until the afternoon wind arrives, which is exactly what you want when you are learning to hold an edge.

Thirty minutes is enough to get up and stay up if you have stood on a snowboard, a wakeboard or a surfboard before. If you have not, the instructor will still get you out of the water, it just costs you a few more attempts and a fair amount of swallowed sea. The session is run by an instructor from the boat, and it can be tuned down for a first attempt or up to jumps and tricks if you already ride.

Paddleboarding, the slow way

Stand-up paddleboarding is the opposite of the other two: no engine, no instructor shouting over a motor, no adrenaline unless you go looking for it. You stand on a wide board, you paddle, and Hvar opens up at three kilometres an hour. Calm bays, water clear enough to count the stones under you, and coves that no road reaches.

The board is yours for the day rather than for a session, which is the point. Take it around the corner to a quiet bay before breakfast, leave it on the beach at lunch, go out again when the light drops. It works for almost every age and for people who have never balanced on anything, and it is the one activity here that a family can do together without anybody needing to be brave.

Where you meet, and what to bring

Everything runs from Hvar town, which means you can walk to it. Check in at the desk on Trg sv. Stjepana 38, on the main square, or at the waterfront point on Petrićevo šetalište, and the boat or the ski takes you the short distance out to sheltered water. In season the desk is open from 8:30 in the morning until 22:30 at night, seven days a week, so a late booking for tomorrow is usually not a problem.

Bring swimwear, a towel and sun cream, and leave everything else on shore. Helmet, life jacket, harness and board come with the session. Wind is the only thing that moves a booking: when the afternoon maestral gets up, the flyboard and the wakeboard move to the next calm slot rather than being cancelled outright, and you keep your money either way.

Season runs from May to October, with July and August the busiest by a distance. If you are a group of six or more, or you want a specific hour, book a day or two ahead rather than turning up.

Watersports on Hvar, common questions

How much does flyboarding cost in Hvar?

120 EUR per person for a 25 minute session. That covers the board, the helmet and life jacket, the jet ski that feeds it and an instructor who stays with you one on one for the whole session.

Do I need experience to try a flyboard?

No. Most people who book have never seen one outside a video. The instructor controls the power from the ski and raises it as you find your balance, so the first minutes are spent at knee height rather than three metres up.

Do I have to be able to swim?

Yes, for all three activities, and there is no way around it. You will end up in the water, that is part of it. A life jacket is worn throughout, and for the flyboard a helmet as well.

How hard is flyboarding, really?

Three out of five. Getting out of the water is the awkward part and takes a few tries; once you stop fighting the board and stand straight, it holds you up. Most people are hovering steadily well inside the 25 minutes.

How long should I set aside for a session?

About 45 minutes in total. Twenty five of those are on the board, the rest is the briefing, the kit and the short ride out to the spot.

Where does it all happen?

In sheltered water off Hvar town. You check in at the desk on Trg sv. Stjepana 38 or at the waterfront point on Petrićevo šetalište, both a short walk from the harbour.

Can we book a flyboard for a stag party or team building?

Yes, and it is what the flyboard is booked for most often. Sessions run back to back so a group of eight or ten can all fly in one afternoon. Tell us the group size and we hold the slots together.

What if the wind gets up?

The session moves. Flyboard and wakeboard need reasonably flat water, so when the afternoon maestral arrives the instructor shifts you to the next calm slot, usually the following morning. Nobody is sent out in conditions that would spoil it.

How much is a paddleboard for the day?

60 EUR in high season and 50 EUR in low season, from 09:00 to 18:00. It is a rental rather than a lesson, so the board is yours for the whole day and you decide where it goes.

What is the price for wakeboarding?

On request, because it depends on the boat and the time of day. Ask us and you get the current figure in writing before you commit to anything.

How far ahead should I book?

In May, June, September and October a day is usually enough. In July and August, book two or three days ahead if you want a specific hour or you are more than four people.

What should I bring?

Swimwear, a towel and sun cream. Everything technical is provided. Leave phones and watches on shore, or in the dry bag on the boat.

Rather stay dry?

The same water, at a different speed: a private boat for the day, a boat you skipper yourself, or a transfer straight to a beach you cannot walk to.
